Default Acetone in gas??

So my dad just called me and wanted me to ask you guys if you'd heard anthing about putting Acetone in your gas tank (just a couple ounces). Said it raises the octane and you get a couple more MPGs?? Idk if this is true or not...

He said he just read like a 6 page thread on LS1tech.com saying that it works.

I just didn't know if you'd heard/tried this on your cars?

It has been scientifically proven to be worthless.

I wouldnt do it if you want higher octane add some racing fuel. If you want better gas mileage dont drive it as hard. But thats my opinion.

Adding a couple ounces of acetone to 15.7gal of gasoline would create a mixture that is 0.8% acetone and 99.2% gasoline¹. Acetone (pure) is 150 octane, let's assume the gasoline is regular grade 87 octane.

So, we have a mix of 0.8% 150 octane and 99.2% 87 octane = 87.5 octane--not quite there are we?

It would take 16oz (6% of total) to get the 87 octane base up close to 91 octane. At the local Home Depot acetone is $17/gal, so that's $4.25 worth of acetone--or you could just pay $3.00 extra at the pump for 91 octane, or $4.50 or so to buy 93...

----------------------------------------
¹ - This is the result of the additional 2oz of acetone, the base fuel may already contain acetone--this does not however alter the resulting octane calculations.
