Default 02 too rich

i got a 97 gt and the check engine light keeps coming on. the code says 02 banks 1 and 2 too rich. i changed both 02's and cleared the codes came back, would putting my bbk cold air intake cause a rich code to pop up? and do i need to recalbrate my mass air flow? if anyone may know the cause to my 02 worries would you please share your knowledge???

What were the codes?

There are at least 1/2 dozen DTCs that indicate a rich condition, and which do not indicate bad O2 sensors--in fact as you have found these trouble codes often indicate a problem being reported by a good O2 sensor.

There is no such thing as "recalibrating" a MAF, so you can rule that out. Make sure the intake air sensor is properly installed and connected.

Get the exact codes and look them up here (post them to this thread too) and we'll be able to provide more help...

p0172 is the code i get for banks 1 and 2. when i changed the 02's they were extremly carboned up. it dosent run rough at all, just bairly squeeked by e-test but it did pass. is there a way to check the maf? didnt look a the fuel system much but i dont think its the problem. the exhaust dosent smell as if theres raw fuel in there. i dont have many resources in the city i live in so if theres any info you can use to help figure it out i can get it and post it back up just dont know where or how to start. thanks for takin a look either way though!

P0172 is the passenger side "too rich" code, P0175 is the code for bank 2, did you get both codes or just the P0172?

Double check the electrical connection to the MAF, and visually inspect it for damage and/or dirt--they have to be pretty dirty to screw up, so just a bit of dust is nothing to worry about at this point.

Also your car has a return-type fuel system, and one thing that can fail on these older return-type systems in the fuel pressure regulator--that can cause an overall rich condition.

Check the fuel pressure to rule that out; with the vacuum hose to the FPR disconnected and plugged the fuel pressure should be around 40 psi.

Check all the EVAP system hoses too, they can rot and crack after 15 years.

Did you look at the possible causes on my website?
