a/c compressor squeel

a/c compressor squeel
2000 gt. my a/c compressor squeels when the compressor clutch is disengaging, about every 30 seconds {with a/c on, no noise when a/c is off. do I just need a new a/c clutch kit? thanks Domn8torGT.

The gap between the clutch disk and the pulley is supposed to be 0.014" to 0.030", measured as shown here:
If it's more than 0.025" (too close to the upper limit for comfort) you can pull the center bolt, the friction disk, and remove one of the hub spacers (items 4 in the diagram below):
Take the thinnest one out first and reassemble the clutch, then remeasure the gap--if 0.014" to 0.020" then that may fix the squealing. If you can't get the setting right go by a friendly AC shop; they usually have drawers full of the shim washers and give you a few for free.
I had to do this to my '03 last spring...
