This is highly encouraging to me. I am currently saving up for my tuner and was debating on doing some exterior stuff for now because I can do them with the cash I already have. But after reading this...I think I will wait.

Cliff when you say open up the exhaust...how open does it have to be? I put some straight through SSS Adrenaline Mufflers on, but it still has stock headers, the 6 catted midpipe, and all stock pipes.

I don't think I'll be able to afford the install cost of long tubes anytime soon and I think an o/r x pipe would just be way to loud. What do you think?

Are you sure there's 6 cats, I thought they only used 4?

Nonetheless, everything from the exhaust manifolds back needs to be 2-1/2" ID. A catted aftermarket X or H-pipe will have so-called "hi-flow" converters (they are really just small, there's no such thing as a high-flow cat), and not having them adds very little to no power--just noise as you have suggested.

I have UPR's catted X-pipe and DynoMax pipes with Magnaflow mufflers and have been very pleased with the sound and performance.

I was just going off of this picture.

From 5.0 Mustangs and Super Fords Magazine's website:

"Even though Ford did the right thing and upgraded '99 Mustang GT engines with Performance Improved cylinder heads, the company also saddled '99 GTs with six catalytic converters in the exhaust system."

^^^ I'm pretty sure the "cat" closest to the headers is just a heat shield. At least that is what it looks like on mine.

Ugh I need a custom tune.

My 2001 Bullitt "only" had 4 cats. I belive that my 2000 Roush had 6 though. I could be mistaken on the 2000. That was 10 years ago and my memory isn't that good.

I had a custom tune done by a local tuner who is excellent. I just didn't feel much difference. Is it possible that the Bullitt came with a slightly different tune than the GT?

But you have a 2001...

Ford improved the engine control in late '99 and went to four cats for the '00 through '04 models; they refer to the front one as the "light-off" converter and the rear one as the "under body" unit.

from the 2000 Shop Manual:

Not that I am aware of--do you know what the strategy or box codes are?

The Roush might have been a '99 MY modified by them and sold as a 2000 Roush? Also I do not know exactly when Ford went to four cats, it may have been a "mid-year" change...

If I have a stock 2003 Mustang V6 with an automatic transmission should I expect to see a difference with a tuner?

I may add a CAI in the distant future but was wondering if a tuner would be worth the ~$400. Or a chip would be about $100 cheaper...

This is a daily driver but would be nice to have a little extra power. Also, a tune for better MPG would be nice; would I expect to see a few extra MPG with certain tunes?
