Stock they should hold 540 rwhp if you don't rape it easily they are rated for 700 ft/lbs of torque

What type of improvements did you see with the transgo shift kit? How much would you want for the valve body?

I always heard it was rated to 700tq as well. however theres no way it could ever handle that much.

it drove like stock pretty much when you're putzin around town, but when you were in it more than say half throttle and held 1st or 2nd out to a decent rpm it'd chirp the tires every time, and shifted real crisp and clean at full throttle. I really dont know how alan's kit can be any better, but i figured i'd give it a shot. I listed it at $90/obo shipped on corral

Firmer shifts. I've had 2 transgo shift kits in my 4r70w and I wasn't all that impressed. They barked the tires for sure but if I had to do it over I would buy a modified valvebody from Darrin at BC Auto. Plus the VB Darrin offers are a better design then the transgo kits.

the only way i could see anyone confusing that 700tq was for the "70" in 4r70w. some say thats the limit b/c thats what ford rated it at, tho the ONLY reference i've see is on wikipedia which says there was a ford expedition document released stating that it is capable of 506 ft/lb of torque, which equates to 686 N-m, and can be rounded up to 700...

however, that was also a 2003 document, and as we've already seen there's a diff between older 4r70w's... hard to believe ford envisioned the 4r70w to hold 700 ft-lbs when the named it, or even 700 n-m for that matter... so i'd believe more so that the 70 is related to the .70 final ratio...

from what i've read so far though, its very possible to build a nice stout transmission with a later model 4r70w and some basic upgrades pointed out in the article posted earlier. and the upgrade kit that was purchased for ~400 or 450$ by ctgreddy seems to have everything included, and if Alan says thats good for 600+, i'd say he knows what he's talkin bout..

^agreed, ctgreddy ive dealt with alan before and he's very knowledgable in tranny's/converters. Seems like you should have a stout setup when completed. Good luck on it all

also agreed. I dont remember where i heard it from but i've only heard it was rated for that. however I agree with you both that there's no way it could handle that lol.

and this is the 2nd time i've delt with alan, cant say anything but good things. whenever i have questions he's more than willing to explain everything to me. he talked to me for close to 10 minutes just about the best way to do the tail shaft lube mod. cant say enough about his company
