pretty much this. there is a ton a tools and procedures to set up an 8.8. In reality, if you go from stock unopened rear to ford racing 3.73s or 4.10s you can pretty much just reuse the shims behind the pinion bearing and on the sides of the carrier and slam it all together. Sometimes you might have to adjust the left/right shims on the carrier, but otherwise itll slide together and operate just find by slamming it all back with the original stuff. Now you still have to properly install the bearings and races which can be tricky if you dont have the correct tools or knowledge. I can do an 8.8 gear swap in a mustang in roughly an hour

Also, by your description it sounds as if you have a bearing going south

I checked out some stuff on how to do it and yea...doesn't look too bad.

Going to jack the car up this weekend and see if I can tell what is making the noise...spindle, bearing, gears, etc.

Then I'll fix whatever is making the racket! Thanks!!

If you have never done one before it will take a whole lot more than an hour, Whitefox has been doing this a while.

I did mine in my garage over a weekend, but i did everything, i removed the whole axle then rebuilt clutch packs, new differential bearings and races axle bearings and seals and painted

here's a few pics
