Default cats

Do hi flow cats make difference compared to stock cats? Planning on changing exhaust, want it to sound good and add hp but still be legal. Cops around here arent fond of real loud cars. No money for tickets.

Can you add x or h pipes to stock cats and new mufflers?

05whitestallion,

The only real bottleneck in the stock exhaust system after the cast manifoldsare the stock cats, the rest of the stock exhaust is very free flowing. If you want more power I suggest installing a MagnaFlow Tru-X Pipe with high-flow cats. This catted down-pipe provides just enough backpressure to keep the engines torque at low RPM without adding significant restriction at high RPM. The MagnaFlow Tru-X Pipe with high-flow cats produces as much power as an O/R pipe but is not quite as noisey as an O/R pipe and keeps the cats in th stock location with all the same O2 sensor bungs so it is a legal configuration. The MagnaFlow Tru-X Pipe w/cats is the only down-pipe that is capable of being smog legal because of the OBDII compliant cats and the location of the cats. You have to use shortys but this combination is within 5rwhp of a set of good longtubes andO/RX-pipe. The combination of JBA shortys, MagnaFlow Tru-X Pipe with OBDII high-flow cats and stock rear muflers works very well and sound great witout being too loud when driven easy. It can and does get louder when you step on the throttle and it retains the sock exhaust systems classic muscle car sound signature, just louder and more "muscular" sounding.

Cheers!

Do I need shortys with hi-flow cats or just the magnaflow tru x system. Do they make a system with all components included or do you have to buy seperately each part? I am looking at a price standpoint. I do plan going on and changing the mufflers too. But the prices will inhibit me on other mods for a while, such as cai, tuner and new wheels and tires. thanks for the help!

Hi Greg,

I have to warn you about the MagnaFlow Tru-X Pipe with high-flow cats, it's almost as loud as running an O/R X pipe and has the usual X-pipe resonance centered at about 2,500RPM's or so. It has taken me several different rear mufflers to find a configuration that doesn't amplifythe 2,500RPM resonance too much. I've tried a lot of different setups and the only ones that really have minimal resonance were the stock Ford mufflers and the FRPP M-5230 GTA mufflers. All of the straight through bullet style rear resonators amplify the resonance and it is really loud and annoying to both the people inside AND outside the car! I was about to give up and go back to the stock catted H-pipe until I came across a seto M-5230 GTA's and tried them. They look and sound pretty good and ar reasonably quiet when easy on the throttle but they are plenty loud when you are running flat out, it sounds a lot like a NASCAR motor on an oval when I'm driving it revved up to redline or running at high RPM's. But the stock catted H-pipe sounds even better with thes M-5230 GTA's with no resonance from the X-pipe problems. The Shelby GT's and Hertz GT-H's have this rear muffler and the FRPP bolt-in X-pipe and sound really good with reasonable sound levels too. But I like the power of the MagnaFlow Tru-X Pipe so I have alittle bot of resonance to deal with when it is cold.

I'm running JBA shortys and have pretty good power form the total exhaust system. I'm pretty sure it works because I'm puting down within 5rwhp of the other S197 GT's with 5speedswith the same modsbut withJBA, ARand Kook's long tubes and O/R or cattedX-pipes instead of my JBA shortys and MagnaFlowTru-X Pipe. I don't think there is as big a difference on a carwith all the bolt-ons like mine hascompared toa completely stock car.

Cheers!

What about the bbk headers, I found those for pretty cheap online, are they pretty good with this setup. What I may do is add the headers and magnaflow tru x pipes with hiflow cats and go from there. If I want to change the mufflers out after hearing it I will. I am looking for more sound than stock but not way overpowering. What cai do you recommend and tuner for that. Thanks for all the help!

Hi Greg,

It has beenmy experiencestarting at thefront of the exhaust system will getthe most power out of our S197GT's. Most folks rushed out and spent $400-$600 on rear mufflers or silencers only to finda zero increase in power becauselike I said, that is not the problem, it's the cats and stock H-pipe. If you are going to install shortys don't bother unless you are going to install JBA shortys. The cost of labor isthe same, high, and theincrementalcost of the JBAheaders vs. the BBK shortys (whichIMO are not very good really),is small. Even with the JBA shortys there is notquite aslarge a gain as with long tubes so you might just as well get all there is if you are going to go to all the trouble to installaset ofshorty headers. Just my take on it, YMMV. I think that once you get the headers of your choiceand Tru-X Pipe with high-flow cats installed you will like the stock Ford muffler's sound. It's like stock only louder and better!

RegardingCAI kits if you are going to stay N/A and plan to installall of the intake sidebolt-ons along with a set of camsI like the Steeda CAI with high-flow elbow upgrade or the C&L Racer. If you are not going to install cams the best bang for the buck on the intake sideis a set of FRPP CMCV delete plates andthestandardor upgraded Steeda CAI ora C&L StreetCAI kit. Pass on the C&L Racer and larger 62mm throtle body because without cams they are reallyjusttoo big and hurt your power and torque curves when compared with the smaller parts. The good thing about passing on thebig C&LRacer intake and BBK 62mm throttle body is that you will have the money for a Meziere electric water pump which is really good for8-11rwhp depending on RPM!

Hope this helps you.

Cheers!
