forging motor
whats the best route to take when doin this?
1) buy just internals
2) stroking and internals
3) or buying a new block with either of the above options
and if a new block aluminum or iron?
how much less does the aluminum way than the iron?
and how much will stroking to a 5.0/302 hurt the engine lifetime wise?
sorry for all the questions I just want to make sure that i do my stuff right the first time

RE: forging motor
I would buy a complete shortblock from a builder like Livernois. If you know a great modular builder you could just buy the forged rotating assembly and have them do the build.
Stroking these motors yields very few cubes because you have the risk of piston slap if your stroke is too long. So most people are stroking them to like 297 inches. I think if you go 302 inches you will be getting some piston slap. Piston slap will lead to early demise of your motor.
I would use the original style aluminum block to save 80-90 pounds of weight. Unless you are going over 800 HP you should be fine.

RE: forging motor
I do think the difference between the aluminum and iron blocks is roughly in the range that zkiller said.
I also think Livernois is a great company, but expensive also. I think a few people are using MMR( http://modularmustangracing.com/) blocks too. If I did this, I would probably go with MMR.
Please keep us updated though. I love reading about these builds as I find them fascinating!

RE: forging motor
we had one built by johnny lightning performance, it was bored out to a 302 with forged internals, rated to 900 horses. Great motor, I am running the kennebell 2.6l system and she is a beast. Check em out.
