I have a 2006 GT Auto w/ axle backs, CAI and Bamachips tune. I was wondering what should be the next step.... Gears or Torque Converter? If gears, which kind...3.73's?
I think the best gears for an auto are 3.73’s but if it were me I would get a Converter first, then the gears. IMHO a TC is about the best thing you can do for performance improvement with an auto.
Thanks for the input guys, I know the Gears will get me to my power band faster and speed up the car, but what does the Torque Converter do?
It really depends on what you are modding for ? drag racing, road racing, or just street driving?
drag racing- gears (3.73 FRPP), stall converter, lower control arms, upper control arm, drag radials = bestway to drop your 1/4 mile time, learn how to race !!!!!definately easier with AUTO lol
road racing - focus on suspension (LCAs/UCAs, panhard, sway bar,etc...), although a stick is really better suited for road racing
daily driver - really up to you, I did exhaust (LTs , X-pipe) to get a kick *** sound and add a little HP/TQ while doing the other stuff for racing. here is my audio clip : http://www.houndbite.com/?houndbite=848

The Torque Converter is the "clutch" for automatic transmissions. It uses transmission fluid to transmit the engine power to the transmission. At a stand still, very little fluid is pumped, which allows the engine to keep turning while the wheels and transmission are not. As engine speed increases, so does the fluid pressure and eventually both the engine (i.e., TC) and the transmission spin at almost the same speed (although the standard TC will always spin slightly faster than the transmission - that is a reason why auto fuel economy suffers). Upgrading to a "lock-up" TC (i.e., one thatlocks the engine and transmission together at a certain speed/rpm) will direct more torque to the wheels for improved acceleration.
I did the gears and then TC. But if I had to do it all over again I would have done TC first as it's one of the best mods for an auto (IMO). I didn't do any track runs before and after but some have claimed up to .3 - .5 drop in ET's on TC upgrades.
