Auto with 3.73 gears
#12
Don't tell the OP to get 4.10's. They obviously drive at 70mph sometimes which is going to be bad with 4.10's.
OP. How far do you commute the stang? For me, I drive 70 miles round trip all highway so there is no way I could go 4.10s. I do 70-80mph the whole way.

i keep fighting myself about the gear swap also. still haven't pulled the trigger because most say 3.73 aren't worth the hassle. Dave at brenspeed also says that most of their auto cars run o.e. 3.31 gearing still.

Not worried about MPG. Worried about high revving all the time. I do like my loud exhaust, but I wouldn't be able to have a conversation without yelling when driving over 60mph with the windows up if I went with 4.10s.

I highly recommend the 3.73 gear with the automatic. It is an awsome combination. It is well worth the upgrade cost. My Ford dealer did the gears in my S-197 and in my Fox. I have never had any whining because I had a qualified drivetrain technician do the job and do it properly. Gears that are installed correcdtly dont whine. People take shortcuts and then your gears whine. You need to do new bearings, crush sleeve and properly shim using depth gauge.
I also have a set of 4.10 gears in my Fox and they are a little too much on the highway with the Fox and it has limited top end in that car too.
I have had 3.73 in the Fox and have run 4.30 gears in my previous Foxes. I have been drag racing Mustangs for over 30 years and I can tell you that bigger isnt always better or faster. It is a matter of combining the correct gear ratio, tranny, and having a motor that can rev to the necessary RPMs to move those gears.
If you have a 10,00 RPM Boss 302 engine you can run a 4.56 gear and it will be a good combo. If you run 4.10 you will be revving higher in every gear in comparison to those factory 3.31 gears..
