-Pypes O/R X
-Charge Motion Control Valve (delete)
-***** Thumpr cams
-Comp 20% phaser limiter
-Comp or Manely springs
-Ported Stock heads
-91 Octane Tune

I already have 3.55 gears stock but will be upgrading to 3.73's as per comps recommended gear setup for the Stage 2 thumprs. I'm hoping for 380-400 RWHP with this setup.
crono2120 - I have to agree with abarker on this one, you are not gonna see 380+ RWHP with that setup, unless your tuner is playing with Dyno numbers to make you happy. If you are looking at keeping the car N/A you probably should look at Long Tube Headers, new 24#+ injectors, and possibly UDP's as well. With all of that, you might get to 350RWHP. I do not know how much HP you will pick up from porting the stock heads, but I would guess that it would be under 10HP as they are certainly capable handling more than enough air for applications under 400HP.

Now that being said, here is what I would do. Skip the springs (as they are not required with the MT's), CMCV delete, and forget about porting the heads. Get yourself some LT's, UDP's, and drop the rest of your the cash on a NO2 kit with a 75 shot. That my friend should get you over the 400RWHP mark. Beyond that, you need to look at forging the bottom end of the 4.6 motor IMO. Or just skip it all and get pricing for a FI kit from your favorite online retailer =)

I believe cams that produce a big lope by increasing duration will result in more unburnt fuel.

crono,

To get the numbers you want you'll have to do as others have said and get some long tubes, all the other typical bolt ons, and a stroker (most likely with higher than stock compression too).

The new C&L intake manifold will help a lot once it's released. 17rwhp has been seen with it on a stock car and the more mods you have the higher numbers you'll see. I've been thinking about this intake myself. The only bad thing is it kills the option of a twin screw or TVS in the future.

and i believe, your belief, is exactly right on.

this example is for the hot rods, but i believe it applies
to the thumper line also.

the biggest and imo the only important
factor with the hot rods vs. stock, is when the
intake valves begin opening.

as the piston is coming up during the exhaust stroke,
the stock cam begins opening the intake valves at
345*, compared to the hot rods which start opening
up at 311* (34* earlier).

so there's more time while both the exhaust valve
and the intake valves are still slightly open and
a very small percentage of intake charge can escape
out the exhaust port.

I'm stoked for the new intake from c and l. With cams that should post impressive gains. I'm hoping for 25+ with cams.

Not sure you'll get 400RWHP with these mods. The stock heads will limit you.

You might want to look into Livernois cam lockouts and heads. They made 400 rwhp with their NA setup.

From what I've seen so far, you won't if you drive "normally." It's all in your right foot. But I guess it depends on where you drive and what other mods you have too. I've seen some impressive MPG reports with people using cams (Thumprs or Hot Rods and 4.10's, etc.).

FWIW, my highway on 4.10s and hot rods driving up into Payson going uphill much of it @65 mph was 24mpg

Well, I think that those numbers can be a little misleading. According to the article, "In stock trim, the Three-Valve engine made 313 hp and 314 lb-ft of torque. Our test engine was fitted with Kooks dyno headers, XFI stand-alone EFI, no engine accessories (except for a water pump), and no airbox or MAF sensor. VCT was locked out due to the use of the aftermarket EFI." And keep in mind that these are numbers from the Engine Dyno, rather than at the wheels. Now with their ported heads they did pick up 100HP on the Engine Dyno. Keep in mind however that those are ported heads using custom intake and exhaust valving at 38mm and 35mm respectively. Also, keep in mind that the final 451HP (~383RWHP) number was made using Comp Stage 4 cams, which require phasers and springs, and by using the VCT lockout, you WILL really kill your mileage.

Not saying that the numbers are bad, just for all of that you could always buy a pretty nice FI setup. Unless of course you are like me and just like building N/A engines to throw money at LOL.
