Default Jacking Up the Engine

I will be install some BBK shorty headers tomorrow. For those of you who have installed headers themselves on jack stands, how did you jack up the engine off the motor mounts? Please be as detailed as you can thanks.

Thanks in advance,

Scott

Use a piece of 2x4 under the corner of the block and only do one side at a time. Make sure when your jacking the motor up U have someone on the top side to make sure you don't cram the top of the motor into the firewall. Some people will say jack it up off of the Oil pan but that never struck me as a good idea. the oil pan is made to hold oil, not hold up the engine. You may also need to remove the steering shaft and starter to get enough clearance to get them in. Also you may find this link helpful as a guide BBK shorty guide.http://www.mustangmonthly.com/techar...ers/index.html

When you say "corner of the block" is that the front of the engine block or back towards the tranny? I don't like the idea of jacking under the oil pan either. The Haynes manual I have for the mustang says to jack to the side of the oil pan where it bolts to the block.

I did find that guide for the bbk's when doing a forum search. That is very helpful guide.

Thanks,

Scott

your correct, put the 2x4 next to the oil pan and jack it up from about the center of the block you don't want to put the jack to far forward or rearward. make sure that when your raising the engine that the jack nor the 2x4 move/shift, they shouldn't just take your time. I had a shop do mine and they let me observe. They made it look very simple. key words look simple. they work almost exclusivly on fords and have done alot of headers on our S197's good luck and when you get under your car you'll be able to see a good spot on the bottom of the block.

I just did mine last week and I jacked up the motor by the oil pan. It seems like a dumb idea, but the oil pan is made of pretty heavy metal and has a ton of bolts holding it on. Take your jack of choice and put a phone book on it. Then put a piece of plywood over the phone book. Then put another phone book inbetween the plywood and your oil pan. So basically you have a jack, a phone book, a piece of plywood, and another phonebook and then your oil pan. This worked for me and also decreases the height you have to raise your jack to get the motor jacked up.

Someone else here jacked it up by the pan and ended up with a crease.

I'd rather do it by the side one end at a time if it comes to that.

I wouldnt jack it by the pan with only a block of wood b/c the oil pan is not flat on the bottom. If you use a soft surface like a phone book or a soft cover thick book, you should be fine.

Thanks for the replies everyone! I think I am going to try to do one side at a time and jack to the side of the oil pan. Wish me luck! I'll post a sound clip when they are in.
