Default Does it hurt your car..........

does is hurt your car/engine, etc. if you consistently run through the gears above 3k before shifting to the next gear? Are these engines built to withstand driving them like this? I am in no way an engine/gear head and was just wanting to ask some of you guys that are. Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

Yes above 3k is fine. The car doesn't even make good power until 3,500 rpms. Just make sure you keep your rpms low and your load low when your engine is cold (if your water temp gauge is still all the way to the left). Once she is at full temp, give her hell.

/agree

Lots of other stuff will break way before your engine. Unless you really beat the hell out of it you should get at least 100,000 as long as you maintain it properly. Shifting at 3000 isn't going to hurt anything but your fuel mileage. And even then just barely.

I thought max power came from a cold engine?

I really hope that you refering to the " Cool Dense Air " for our machines, and hopefully not beating it when the engine is cold...!!!!

you do mean with a manual tranny correct, and not shifting an automatic?

i didn't know you could shift below 3k....seriously, it will just affect your mileage.

I drive with a huge chunk of ice tied to the front bumper.

Seriously, sometimes I will drive like my grandpa for a week. It makes it so much more rewarding when I decide that it's over.

Shifting at or above 3k won't hurt these S197 engines and will actually keep them a bit cleaner (less carbon buildup) then if you were shifting at 2k or below. Shifting at a higher RPM means starting out at a higher RPM in the next gear and not lugging the engine as much. It WILL drop your fuel mileage a tad, however.

I can probably say that in typical "mindless" driving I shift around 2600 RPM. Spirited driving, it's close to or at redline all the way!

Getting back on the subject... as long as you stay underneath redline you can shift any RPM and/or hang it in any RPM.
