Another option, but more costly would be a prochamber w/hi-flow cats welded in.

why buy a mustang if you want it to sound like something else? stick with the h-pipe, ford put it on there for a reason, it sounds good. I love my o/r H, ive heard a few o/r x set-ups and im not impressed, i dont know when the goal became having your car loud instead of having your car sound good but its not the same thing. X pipe kinda sounds like a boat.

Call it a case of "fine tuning" the car to suit yourself rather than trying to change your preferences to suit stock(ish). You buy the car for the 95% - 99% that you do like and fix the rest.

Loud for the sake of being loud? Longer than I've been driving.

If my only frame of reference for a louder H-pipe or straight dual exhaust was some late-model lifted truck with automatic transmission - I'd intentionally choose nearly anything else.

Hate to burst anyone's bubble here, but Mustangs have been running dual straight-pipes for decades. Boat motor? They do put them into boats too, I guess. One point made here that is true among any exhaust debate is that it's a preference thing. I don't prefer to be closed-minded on the subject, but I prefer the SLP. The studies they've done on the X hav rendered that there's better pulse-evening benefits than the H, and the X has better cross-flow at high RPM. The 6ers actually prefer the H over the X and sound better with it, too, I think. Even if negligable, the X gets VERY SLIGHT Hp gain over the H...off-road or not. I believe this was Hot Rod's testing, but don't quote me on it yet. As far as the X and H sounding the same? Definitely not, with the X being more raspy than the H. Going off-road (e.g. sans-cats) seems to render the difference less distinct since it's so open. That also depends on if you have mufflers or not and what type they are if you do. There's nothing wrong with the stock setup that Ford put on there, I am just the racing type, have always loved the loud sound since I was a kid, and that's what I went for. I COULD NOT BE HAPPIER with the sound of my car. Having a tune for going cat-less is a RECOMMENDATION, not a requirement. You won't trip codes if you install the MIL eliminators, but you WILL...WILL run very rich. Try and be near your exhaust without getting nauxious if you do this. Good luck. My ultimate recommendation to anyone is to search around, LISTEN/WATCH clips of different setups, and pick what you like! Gains are pretty much negligable unless you are running FI. I have noted that without the cats and open exhaust, you lose a very small bit of low-end (loss of back pressure for scavenging), but gain that same small bit on top end. This is my experience, this is my opinion...take it with a grain of salt if you will. Good luck with your decision. Oh, and SLP is getting outrageously expensive nowadays.

Oh, here's my "boat motor," heh. First is an inside from the run I made (only my second time on the track). It was slick that night, but these wide tires helped a LOT. Slick guys were spinning a lot that night. Of course, I missed 3rd, too, heh. Second is a street video with some in-town cruising. I couldn't cut up too much...a lot of cops that day. This is also cat-less! I loved it for a little while, but my oil smelled of fuel, and my pipes were blackened very quick. I got worried and removed 'em. I also passed a guy and almost deafened MYSELF. Third video is back to catted SLP exhaust. Last video is from when I first installed my exhaust. Factory vs. SLP. I think the factory is closer to the "boat motor" sound that was referred to, but I still don't think either is bad, just preference.
