I'm adding a supercharger later this year and I haven't done anything power wise except for a $75 tune. I've been working on suspension mods which will be needed with the supercharger.
Thats true.. even with the paxton tuner kit, it'll add way more whp then cams...

150 additional whp with just a bold on is friggin' nuts.

+1 on holding off on the cams. If you do them, you really want to match them to the type of blower you'll be using, or n/a.
Building the shortblock will build you a very solid foundation, but there's still a ton of stuff you'll have to keep in mind as well; as you mentioned, transmission, but also, driveshaft, fuel system, etc.

I'm doing a v8 swap right now, building a 4.6, stroking it to near 5.0, with custom-grind blower cams, for later (this spring) when I slap on a Kenne Bell blower. The cams and head work runs into quite a bit of change, and you can get by with using the stock ones up to a point anyways.
Whatever you do, take your time and plan it all out carefully. You dont want to jump in and put in some cams that wont work for you down the road.

I worked on some cams and timing on an old 4.0 that came out of an explorer today, made me want to do cams even more lol. I know I may regret it down the road, but I really do need some HP to keep me content for the next year or so. I also have this obession of getting into the mid 12s all motor for now lol.

The only other mod I'd consider over cams would be a high stall converter (3k), LCAs and some DRs on 17s on the rear. I'd have an awesome 1/8th mile time, but pretty sure my trap will be kinda on the low side. Pretty sure my ET would be nice though, given the mods.

Sounds like a pretty awesome project you got going with the build and the kenne bell.. it's gonna be a friggin' beast once it's done...

Since you are doing all the labor yourself, I don't think cams would be a regretable decision at all. When the time comes for boost, if the cams you have chosen will work, great, if not, it shouldn't be a problem to put the stock cams back in. You can still see gains with a blower grind on a N/A motor, they just won't be optimal. On the other hand, if you put a blower over a N/A cam, you may rob yourself of some manifold pressure. Just don't get too extreme with your cam choice and you should be fine.

Ditto.. I don't mind having to swap out the CAMS later on. I can always sell them. I am pretty sure the cams and delete plates/race tune will keep me happy until the supercharger.

PS: Breathegood;
what times are you running in the 1/4??

I have been doing alot of research on the matter also... All depends on what I get back from taxes but I am either building the crap out of my motor so I can jump my Saleen up to the 14psi range, or doing a ton of suspension. So far the build looks like this

Everything I can reuse from stock block
http://www.haneymotorsport.com/HMS%2...ing%20Kits.htm
in the stroker flavor

+
http://www.brenspeed.com/127550.html
(check the video, not many lumpy cams that still build boost well)

+
one of the flywheels in the 8 bolt pattern here:
http://www.specclutch.com/cars/Ford/Mustang/2008/Single

and a few other supporting mods, but thats most ofthe expensive stuff.

Planning on ending up in the low 600rwhp range and think the motor will be good. A build like this would be good for everything from lower boost applications but can tage the pressure as you keep upgrading. So for example you can get a base kit running lower boost for now, then later on upgrade to a HO kit with smaller pulley, then later if you wtill want more, just upgade fuel pump and injectors with the really silly pulley and you can handle it. Peace of mind on the motor is worth alot IMO. To bad it cost alot also.

Never been to the track. I just got the car back from the work you see in my sig the week before christmass. I probably won't make it to the track before I start my own forged internals project.

If you're trying to get there with the Saleen, I think most of the guys port the blower when they try getting to that level of HP.

Or you could sell the Saleen and get a big boy blower.

I'm just kidding.

Not exactly a "race ready motor" but a solid 4.0 L out of a 99 Ford Explorer.

Just got done doing CAMS on it today. Peice of cake.

..hhmmm... can't wait to put on some cams for the GT, along with delete plates.

.. Turbo!
