Default engine build thoughts?

Putting back together a 99 4.0 L motor from a Ranger and I couldn't help but think about building the 4.6 in my GT.

What's your guys opinions in how to build up the 4.6? Stroke it to a 5.0/5.1 and get some streetable cams put in and call it a day? or build it up for boost?

I was planning on just throwing a blower on it along with some CAMs but couldn't pass up the idea of putting a stroker kit in there.

What are some of the numbers I'd be getting NA with a 5.0 stroker?? How much power can the stock block take?

I'd be doing all the work along side a Ford instructor, so it's no sweat.

I have heard about the stock cams being good to 800whp (??) on another site.

My only delema is that I can either build up the motor, add small mods or save up for a blower. I may build up the motor, add some aggressive cams then keep it like that until I boost her. That way, I won't be limited to (eventhough it's still a hefty 420whp) modest boost levels and be able to really crank out the hp. Thats still without touching the tranny..

ps
nice numbers in your sig.

if I were to get a forged rotating assembly, complete with connetcing rods/pistons- how much safe hp would I be looking at?

of course, I'd still be pretty much limited to how much power the stock auto tranny can handle..

The current 4.6 block in the 05+ stangs will handle in excess of 1000hp so you really don't need to worry about the block. It's really going to depend on the quality of the internals you put in that will determine how much you can push it. Also, once you start going over around 600hp, that's when the stock cams/heads/valves will be a restriction. Now granted, if you want to build the engine up first and then save for a blower, then you could do some top end work as well to get some extra power out while being n/a.

I just had my engine turned into a 302 stroker @ 9.3:1 compression, stock cams & heads but had SS valves put in since one of my stock valves was bent. It also has VCT lockouts installed and it's making around 280rwhp & 310 rwtq while waiting for a s/c. Now if you did cams and kept the VCT you could easily be around the 330 rwhp range and 350 rwtq. I still have stock exhaust as well. Now the numbers would be lower if you do an 8.5:1 compression set-up.

This is by no means the exact truth.

Forged assembly with stock crank ~650 rwhp

Complete forged short block ~800.

Comeplete forged short block with stronger crap like billet rods, 1000 hp. That's a very "shade tree mechanic" way of describing it.

Most of the really built short blocks are rated for somewhere between 800 and 1000 hp.

I think I may be getting ahead of myself, I'll stick to adding cams and delete plates this coming spring. I'd love to install a forged rotating assembly but I still have my doubts... pretty sure I'll be happy with the 30whp with mods.

I'd hold off on the cams and delete plates until you know what you're going to do. If you're installing a blower, you're probably going to go a different route with cams.

I'm adding a supercharger later this year and I haven't done anything power wise except for a $75 tune. I've been working on suspension mods which will be needed with the supercharger.
