Default DIY 8 Rib Conversion

I just pieced together an 8 rib pulley set up for my motor.

Parts list:

YB542 A/C compressor clutch pulley

GP720 Alternator pulley

38052 8 Rib idler pulley

300-006 Power steering pulley

38028 76mm idler pulley X2

38022 90mm idler pulley

4081252 Goodyear gatorback belt

3.500" Whipple Cobra pulley

10% overdrive Innovators West balancer

All parts except for the supercharger pulley and balancer were purchased for under $200. The Whipple pulley was $55 used. Balancer was $425 shipped. A Navigator balancer could be substituted for under $100.

Completed set up

Taking the power steering pulley off. I thought the tool would break it took so much force.

Notice the differences in the pulleys. The new 8 rib had to be monitored as it was installed for proper belt alignment.

The 8 rib idler had a different mounting depth than the 6 rib. The pulleys were compared with a depth gauge and a correction factor was obtained. The bearing had to be pressed out some for proper belt alignment.

This was the biggest beast. First I had to obtain the 33 spline tool. Then figure out how the pulley comes off. Had some help with this. Went to two different shops. The first shop sent me to the second one because "they have a really big impact gun over there". Neither shop charged me. They really dug seeing my car and the motor.

The reason why the alternator pulley is such a bear. The nut is integrated with the hub. When the nut is unscrewing it's also pulling the pulley off of the alternator shaft and it's a press fit. These things aren't meant to come off.

A quick wot blast indicated 15 psi. Once again I'll have to get on the dyno to verify everything is ok.

this is so well documented that i hope matt or mygt500
will make it a sticky, in the How To section.

nice work bruceh! i've wondered for a long time if i was
experiencing some belt slip with my standard 6 rib setup
and seeing how you are now seeing more boost, i think
the answer is obvious.

A suggestion on lining up the power steering pulley:

INstead of spending money on a laser or using a square, use twine or string and wrap it around the crank and the power steering pulley. Criss-cross the strings and it will tell you how aligned the pulley is. If any of the pullies make noise while the car is idling, is usually is the power steering pulley.

Great job man, I pretty much bought mine at cost from BGG so it wasn't much more than this, but man, that's crazy that a little research can save you so much money!

It drives my wife nuts. But on the flip side I don't drink, smoke, or do drugs (did enough them to last an entire lifetime ) so it all comes out in my hobbies.

My projects used to be a lot more rapid fire as well. I have an occasional drink, but the 10 month old slowed down my modding, lol.

I see that you went with the 3.5" cobra pulley, my pulley is 3.375" I believe. I would like to stay around 10psi. How much will the 3.5 hurt my psi? Are there other 8rib pulleys out there closer to 3.375" cheaper than the $139 Lethal or BBG wants for a new one?

On the A/C compressor did you need any special tool? I am getting ready to do my 8 rib conversion but want to make sure I have all the tools handy before I start the project I have read some where that a A/C Air Conditioning Clutch Holding Tool was needed?
One of my concerns is the GP-720 Alt pulley with me having a EForce its simular to a Saleen blower they have the Alt flipped with the pulley pointing toward the moter instead of away from moter I am sure if it works with the Saleen I will be fine??
