Tach Problem - Stepper Motor
My 05 GT is now having a problem with the tach facing in the six o'clock position. The needle still moves, but does me no good like this. After some researching, I'm suspecting I'm one of the lucky ones with a stepper motor that's failing. The warranty expired and I'm trying to figure out my options here without paying a large cost at the dealer to fix it. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.
No replies to my original post, but found this link while doing research. Posting here for the next guy that has this issue.

Didn't see this thread earlier, but ya, follow that, I had the same problem as you and replaced my stepper motor and it was fine. I'd do all the motors too, or at least the speedo while you are in there. To de-solder it, I would bring it to somebody unless you are confident in your skills. I was able to get the new ones on, but did not attempt to take the old ones off.

Another example of a dealership doing what is easy and makes more money for them and costs you more.
I had to do this on my '05 GT because of the same problem...
i never soldered anything before but I ordered the motors off of Ebay and bought a soldering iron from walmart (around $5). I used a bit of a different technique though...instead of removing the solder from the holes, i alternated between pins on one side with the iron, while slightly pulling up on the side of the motor...as the solder heated it would released the pin a few MM's...to install the new ones i did the same thing...alternated on the holes while pushing the motor through...hooked everything up and works perfectly!

That's the correct trick! My first attempt at removing the stepper motor was very difficult. I thought during the desoldering process I would have to remove all the solder first. That didn't work. So I did the same as you, touching the iron at each joint and then pulling outward on the motor. I could hear a slight click noise each time I edged out the motor and kept working in a circle until it finally came out. The last two took only a few minutes to finally remove. This is by far the best money saving project, saved well over $500.
All the gauges are out on my '05 GT. The RPM was the first to go, then the speedo and temp soon after. After poking around the internet, this is a known problem with '05's. Boggles my mind that Ford hasn't issued a recall on this KNOWN problem. Instead of shelling out hundreds for a cluster repair/new cluster, I ordered the stepper motors off EBAY...weekend project
