Default 05 GT Service engine + code & explanation. Help appreciated.

Hey all, I'll keep it as simple and to the point as possible.

Yesterday my gas cap light came on and I figured it was just a kid in the neighborhood messing with me when I realized it was off. The light eventually went off and today the Service light came on. I ran the code and pulled P0506 (Idle Air Control (IAC) System RPM Lower Than Expected) A little googling came up that this is pretty common. I cleared the code just to see if it would come up again and it did tonight.

I bought the car with 44k on it and I've had it two months and it's up to 46k.

Should I start by cleaning the throttle body? I checked the MAF and it looks really clean but I could always clean that too.

The car has no performance mods yet. All stock.

Thanks in advance!

Clean the MAF, TB, and intake tubes. Specifically, inspect the idle air tube that runs from the Passenger side of the intake tube. Make sure nothing is in there. Also while the TB is off,try to clean as much of the plenum as you can with out losing papertowels in there. It's sounds like you have a restriction somewhere. Did your car come with a tuner or did you buy one? Disconnect your battery while cleaning and let the whole KAM reset.

Did the light come on while driving or just when you turned the car on? Weather conditions? Do you feel any loss of power in the car?

I'd also pick up a new fuel cap. When the gasket is damaged, that can cause some odd codes.

I went ahead and picked up a can of crc throttle body & maf cleaner. Just finished and started the car up. Service light was gone and my RPM's had returned to a normal 750 from the 500 I'd been having the last few days. The throttle body was extremely gunky and the maf needed a cleaning too upon further inspection. I don't feel that the gas cap is faulty since it is two months old but if I have anymore issues with it I'll surely pick up another, preferably with a lock this time.

Thanks for the quick responses guys. As of now, this topic can be closed as the problem is resolved!

Great news! For Rpm and throttle issues, always start with a good TB cleaning. It is usually the source of the problem.
