edit: if it means anything, my car has been babied its entire life with just one recent dyno run and three stoplight encounters. no racing or beating on it.
It could be something with the vct.

moose you were right on! and i should have checked the plugs to start...3 loose plugs...had carbon build up inside the plug well...the plugs came right out after 5 or so turns with no effort. i was losing compression after all.
