Default Retrofitting an Airbag in an SVO?

Hey guys,

My son has been looking for a first car, and has recently discovered the SVO-a car I owned and loved aswell. Problem is, my wife is insistent on having an airbag-equipped car. We then came up with the crazy idea of retrofitting a steering column from a later year mustang/ford into an SVO. I have a fair amount of experince working with these cars, so my questions are- is it do-able? how much work is it going to be? can it be done with OEM ford parts (salvaged or off-the-shelf)?

Thanks guys,
Dustin

It can be done but if he's going to drive that car it wont do him much good. You should see what 86 gt 93 lx's first car looking like when it got hit at 40 mph[&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:]

It is doable though. But you'll need all the safty stuff like the crash sensor and all that

Had a junk 86 non svo car. Got a 90 lx air bag type. I can see a steering column change. Plus all the air bag system wiring. Have a 89 lx non air bag. There is a difference between the instrument panel on each. I am not saying it can't be done but it would be a lot of modification. unsure how air bag column would fit dash on the svo. Since a 89 and 90 are similiar in looks but Ford modified that. Maybe can convince her to install better seat for more restrant in a accident and better seatbelt system. If can be of help let me know have junk 86 column and can take pictures of the 90 if would help. Got a website in my file on the airbag wiring on the 90. Will help where I can if decide to do it. There is a forum here on the svo Maybe ask the question there maybe get better answer. https://mustangforums.com/forumid_209/tt.htmWelcome to the forum.

his best bet in a car like that is probably a full cage and a 5 point harness. bolt in cages are failry easy to put in these days and you can get them so that the side abrs open and such. plus just about any speed shop sells simpson 5 point harnesses.
