Default ignition module

ok...i'm new to this forum...i joined for small questions that needed to be answered...so far the luck has been good. now...where can the ignition module be found. i checked the chiltons manual...it said 2 different places.one-on the firewall and 2-in the distribtor cap...now i know i'm not the smartest man alive but i'm a little confused...i have an 85 gt 5speed,5.0 edelbrock carb. i think my car is tfi but i think i'm going retarded. the book states that if it is tfi (thick film integrated) than the module is in the distributor cap...if it is duraspark than it is on the firewall...i looked in the distributor cap...nothing. and low and behold there it is on the firewall. now if i look on summits website, they have pictures of an ignition module...looks nothing like a box. i cannot find this odd lookin contraption in my distributor cap or anywhere in my car. if i look on napa's website they have pictures of ignition modules...one looks like the picture on summit's website...the caption says "w/ Electronic Distributor w/o E.E.C. IV - Electronic Engine Controls IV...heres a picture link http://partimages.genpt.com/partimages/101757.jpg. now on the other hand the website also has apicture of an igntiion module that looks like mine on the firewall...the caption states "w/ Electronic Distributor w/ E.E.C. IV - Electronic Engine Controls IV" here is a picture link also... http://partimages.genpt.com/partimages/101755.jpg
now lets start with my problem. i go to work around 1 p.m. go to start my car...turn the key once...it hesitates a little but chugs for a few seconds...then starts. drive about 25 miles to work. go to lunch around 6p.m. sometimes it starts sometimes it doesn't. go home around 11:30p.m. in the parking lot of my work does not start...wait an hour or so...starts like nothing. i'm going nuts

Sounds like a selenoid to me, do you hear a clicking noise when you turn the key? If you don't chances are that's what it is
My Lincoln did the same thing. It's on the fenderwell by the battery.
