I followed the directions I got to tighten the pinion nut, until it takes 20 inch pounds to rotate the pinion. But no it did not take 150 pounds.

Doing rear gears is not that hard. An average joe can do it as long as he has and idea of how it works. When you were tightning the nut did you get the crush sleave crushed? it takes like 150ft lb+ to crush it.
haha oh yah it is, that's why not many mechanics do them, same idea as carburetors, not many mechanics know how to do them anymore either., Do you know how to mark the gears and check them? Or how much and where the teeth should be mating? Or how much play they should have? Or how to properly shim them? Hell I don't and I've seen it done a hundred times. It's not anything that can be taught in school, so they don't. It's all experience, it's like welding, you can read as much as you want, but that doesn't mean you're going to be good. It's all in experience.

Sometimes when you get the carrier bearings preloaded it can be a real tight fit. I know a buddy of mine said he's had to take a decent sized slide hammer to pull the carrier back out. Take two decent sized prybars and lether rip!

BTW, I think I could get there in 11 minutes....w/o the federali's...

Its not that hard, because my dad and i did mine it makes no noise, it does not get hot, and it has no play. The black lash was dead on. So they dont teach you in school? then why did you go? Thats what school is for, they teach you how to do it. If you catch on then you learned something, if you dont your stupid.

Because you need 1 teacher per student to do this, it's experience, it's like automatic trannys, they don't teach that in school either. The purpose of going to school is to learn to diagnose and repair problems, not to do someone else's job
