Default How to Rebuild Starters

Is it possible to rebuild/clean these to work again? I went and talked to my mechanic today and he said I could take it apart and grease the parts where there was grease before and clean it and it might work. My problem started off when my starter came loose and eventually got to the point where it wouldn't start. I attempted to clean and grease it, then I put it back on and this time it was on clicking. I'm not sure if it's grounded to the motor or how but mine only had one cable to it, should there be two?

Theres a repair kit you can buy, that replaces the solinoid, brush. and little bearings.

What do you think about it only being a one wire hook up, are the rest of your guys like that too or am I missing the ground?

Only one wire. It grounds out when you bolt it on.

How likely would it be that I would have put it on wrong when I re-installed it? I don't really understand why it whirled before and now it only ticks unless I screwed something up when I took it a apart.

You cant really put it in wrong, it only goes in one way. Two bolts.

Just buy a new one 35 bucks at autozone.

I'm in Canada, I don't think we have autozones haha. If I can find a cheap fix to this I can get my rear seal done this weekend and headers and H pipe within a month. I might just end up going to NAPA and being one though if it's going to cause me a **** load of problems.
