since when is it a good idea to bore a stock 302 .60 over??? people usually get it bored over during the rebuild to 306, just for the extra cubes and probably a few horses. might as well while your in there right? you dont have to bore, and if you dont trust your mechanics to bore your block then i sure as hell hope you dont plan on letting them touch the engine during the rebuild. e303 is a decent cam to go. i hope to go something bigger in the future.

No, I am doing it myself with the help of a friend. Anyone know what the stock valve lift and duration are?

How can you tell if you need to bore it? I have a bit over 150K on my engine and I would like to rebuild the engine before I leave the island. I am gonna get the forged piston kit from summit but I don't want to bore it if I don't have to. I've never done it and I don't trust any mechanics here (to do it right or to not overcharge me). Also what else should I get when I the kit to add a little more reliability and hp without raising the gas milage (gas is between $2.20 - $2.50 for regular here)? Cam? Timing gears? If so, what type? I have new headers, cold air intake, and I am going to upgrade to 130 amp alt as soon as I can figure out the wiring. Thanks.
you have to pull a head and then take a good look at the cylinder walls to determine if it needs to be bored. if there is a thick metal ridge at the top of the bore where the rings have worn down the cylinder walls, then it definitely will need to be bored. also if there are heavy scratches and/or grooves cut into the cylinder walls a cleanup bore is necessary. the stock cylinder spec dimensions are:
cylinder bore - 4.000" - 4.0048"
out-of-round limit - 0.0015"
out-of-round service limit - 0.005"
taper service limit - 0.010"
I would ask around and find a good automotive machine shop in the area and talk to them about what you want to do. you would need some professional machining work done anyway for a good rebuild so this is what I would do first. they have all the proper tools to measure the block and crank for wear and can tell you exactly what needs to be done to restore the block and what size pistons and bearings will be needed after the machining is done so you can order the right size parts in the rebuild kit. I would not bore the block more than 0.030" in any event as the 5.0 cylinder walls are kinda thin to begin with and 30 over is a stock rebuild piston size you can easily buy in a kit.

Are you sure this is stock? If so where can I get them from? Summit doesn't have any of these. Better yet can anyone reccomend to me (in relatively simple terms) what I need as far as cam, lifters, timing chain and gears. This car is my daily driver and I am trying to get the parts first and do it all at once with the minimum of downtime. I also can't afford to lose my transportation cause I got the wrong parts. And thanks roundman that really helps a lot.
