Default How much of a pounding can a stang take?

I have an 1988 5.0 GT 5sp with KN intake, Flowmaster catbacks, MSD Blaster coil, 8mm plugwires and Enki rims. There are pictures of my car on page 3 of the gallery,(tell me what you think, i got it for 1700$). The car is fast as hell in a straight line but the handling above 40 mph in corners is subpar, it slides around. What gears do i have in the rearend? They feel pretty low, is there any way to find out what gear ratio I have by driving and looking at the tach? The car is in great condition and was well maintained and will be forever by me.

The biggest qeustion is how much beating, as in burning out racing can they take?
I keep my cars very well maintained but i run 'em hard.
Tell me any experienced that you have had giving you stang hell.

Peace!

First of all thats like asking us to predict when you will die.IMPOSSIBLE!

Too many things factor in to answer your question.

As far as your gears go jack the car up,and rotate the wheel and count the drive shaft revolutions to the wheels rotation and you have your rear gear ratios.Or you can since its jacked up look on the rear axle housing on one of the pumpkind bolts should be a tag with all the info you need.Just get us that tag number.

'88 5-speeds came stock with a 3.08 rear gear, autos had 2.73's. the tag on the housing has the poop you need to know unless someone changed it and then the other method the Killer mentioned will work. it's impossible to predict life expectancy, but Mustangs in general are tough little sumbitches. I drove my 88GT hard from day one after paying $17,000 for it new, then started drag racing it at 78,000 miles. after about a dozen runs, bought a set of slicks and used wheels to mount them on and ran the car with slicks ever since. Put some 3.73's gears in the rear after a year or two and kept right on flogging it. This was my only daily driver for 4 years after I started racing it and it never let me down! Drive it to the strip, change the rear wheels, and flog the living hell out of it, then put the street tires back on and drive it home and to work the next day. I'm still running the stock motor and it still puts out over 60 psi oil pressure with Royal Purple synthetic oil and it has over 108,000 miles on it now! Best advice I can give you is don't miss shifts and change the oil on a regular basis and use a good oil.
as the bumper sticker says, "Drive it like you stole it!" HAPPY MOTORING!
