Default speedometer cable

Hey,

My speedometer has never worked. The speedometer cable is melted probably from the exhaust. I checked the gear, and it's fine. The cable has a little wiring harness on it on the transmission side. The car does not have cruise control and it is a 1884 GT with a 302. Two questions:

What is the wiring harness for?

Can anyone tell me where to start my search for the cause of my speedo not working?

Thanks

Did you pull the speedo cluster out and see if everything is okay?

speed sensor wiring connects to the speedo cable(not sure that the 84 has this)
gear switch hooks to the tranny on top i think (manuals and autos have a version of this one)
reverse light switch also hooks up to tranny, this one on the side

hope this helps

hey buddy [sm=smiley35.gif]. I made a typo. i didn't know they had speed sensor. what's this for? an electric governer? I'm running a points dizzy with a pertronix ignitor, so that shouldn't be an issue. I had my gauge cluster out but i'm not sure what to look for.

cruise control mainly but the ecm also uses it for some air/fuel calculations and other functions,
but you dont have efi...do you?
also, as you may already know, the gear switch works in conjunction with the clutch safety switch to prevent starting the car when in gear and clutch not depressed.
