Default cleaned engine now probs

i just cleaned the engine on my stang. i used engine degreaser and a high pressure sprayer but made sure not to get too close to vacuum lines and alot of electical connections on the motor. i started the car up afterwards and it ran fine (moved it underneath a tree) i let it sit for a couple hours went to restart it and it didnt wanna start without turning the idle up a little bit. i finally got it started and it runs fine as long as its idleing or if you slowly give it throttle. but if you chop it or give it a bit too much throttle it'll start breaking up and sometimes backfire.

i have the exact same problem on my 88 lx and am convinced the water is getting in a wiring harness somewhere and causing problems until the water dries out. i've since not sprayed down my engine compartment 'cause i can't find the problem, but i know exactly what you are experiencing

Take the distributor cap off and look inside it to see if there is any water in there. If so, dry it out and try again.

Here's an old trick... take some silicone spray and spray it under the distributer cap... don't saturate it, but a few good blasts is okay... that'll get the water out and prevent water from causeing problems next time....
