as for the popping out of gear, double check that your shifter stops are adjusted properly. When I put my B&M in it would pop out every once in a while, 5 minutes of adjusting later....problem solved. Now for the grinding....I feel your pain, my baby grinds into third fairly often.

Im in Florida and to pull it myself and buy the parts they want to charge me $400 so it would be a total of about $700, you can get a rebuilt one on e-bay for that. If they did all of the work they told me it would be $1200. I asked the guy if he was smoking some stuff before I talked to him and I told him I could buy a rebuilt one for $700 and he basically told me that I couldn't get it for that.

So basically I hung up on the guy but to my disapointment all of the shops around here want that to rebuild a T5. I live in a cow town so I guess they figure they can rip people off, go figure.

Rebuild it yourself.....I did mine, wasn't that bad and it cost me less than 200 buck. (just for syncros, bearings, retainers, seals...no gears)
