Its good to know somebody that paints...

my car just went in today for paint and lots of body work.. previous owner put on some pretty shady bodywork and single stage paint .. junk

but its gonna cost me 2500-3000$ CDN, depends how bad my rear quarters are.. full colour change, incl doorjambs etc
and im painting it a chevy colour - Dark Spiral Grey Metallic.. sorry :P

I did take it to a shop in town here that does excellent work.. they told me minimum $6500.... if you can do bodywork, i would do it yourself.. but if you have any doubts dont do it.. nothin worse then shatty bodywork, sandlines, ruined body lines, etc.

ok, but about the molding... my last 5.0 that was recently totalled by some dumb blond chick, had the painted moldings with a beautiful black paint job with a small amount of metallic flake. I want to remake my old car, anotherwords... exactly the same. none of ya'll think that the old nasty a** window moldings are disgusting looking, expecially being 13+ years old. I've had 4 foxes and on each one, i'd have to say that was the biggest flaw! on my 4th and most recent...until 3 weeks ago, I loved the glossy flawless moldings. it blended with the all black car. no flat black or cracks anywhere. I guess you'd have to see the car to understand???

Never get a paint job at Maaco. I had them paint (well, they TRIED to paint it) a wing on another car of mine. I had to have them redo it 3 times and it still has paint drips all over the place. I'd hate to see what an entire car would look like.
My brother got a good 2 tone paint job on his truck for a little under $3000. And that's without door jambs or engine bay. I'd say $2500-3500 for a good paint job.

If you can find a bodyman that does side work that will save you tons of money. The guy will probably let you help and you can pick up the basics of the process. I do side work for guys and a very nice base clear costs around 750-1000 in materials alone. That is with a good paint line like PPG or Sikkens. If you go to maaco its a crap job and you should just save your money and get it done properly. As far as the mouldings being painted it is no different than anything else except the proper prep of the plastics and rubber materials. It can be done and I have mine painted in a semi gloss black.
