Comparison
Wasn't sure where to place this, so I just picked here. I am really interested in the 5.0l mustangs (94-95) but as most of you know, they are not the easiest to come by. Well I have been thinking, and what is everyone's opinion on the 96-98 mustang's with the 4.6l? How much slower are they, and what would it take to get them right up to the same HP as the 5.0? I have also heard they are not very reliable in those years, just because it was a new engine, so there was a lot that still wasn't worked out yet.. is this true? How reliable are they? Just let me know what you guys know of the positives and negatives over the 5.0.. not just engine either. What things are better and worse in the 4.6 compared to the 5.0.
Thanks in advance, and sorry there is so many questions lol.

RE: Comparison
the 4.6 is alot more expensive to work on and mod than the 5.0 and from what I gather are a big turd in the 96-98 model. i see 94-95 gt's on ebay all the time some for a great price i would just wait until i found a 5.0.
i know a guy intown with a good running 96 gt and he has msd coils, K&N filter with cai, o/r x pipe with flows and a few other things and in my opinion is slow but a friend of mine used to own a 94 gt it had underdrive pulleys,o/r hpipe with flows and imo it would eat his car alive. good luck in your choice and keep us updated hopefully someone with the ins and outs of the cars will chime in

RE: Comparison
take your time and search for the car you want. 5.0 foxes are easy to come by. some may not be in the best condtion but i see atleast 2 a day.
and heres my opinion.
the 5.0 is a push rod engine, which has been around for decades. its been reworked and refined to be the best it could be in the fox era.
the 4.6 is a ohc engine. something that was fairly new in the early 90s, but by the time they actually put one in a mustang they were decent, and every year they got a little better.
personally, i like pushrod engines. they usually create more torque. ohc engines are great with high hp numbers though.

RE: Comparison
STAY AWAY FROM NON-PI MOD BLOCKS
Now with that said they have the same horsepower rating but less torque (215hp)
they cost more to modify, but what are you looking to do to it? do you plan on racing it or just doing a few mods? but anyways if you go with the 96-98 make sure your first upgrade is to get a set of PI heads

RE: Comparison
my friend has a 96' white gt, stock except for flowmasters, I have my signature and I beat him by about 1-2 car lengths every time, doesn't matter what speed, we go from. Stick to the 5.0 if you are wanting to mod it, it's cheaper and they respond a lot better to any mod.. IMO of course

RE: Comparison
I had a 98, supercharged with an sq trim, to make a long story short I got a bad miss fire. I pulled all the plugs and the electrode on #8 was mashed in. It tripped me out........ so I pulled the head and found that the top of the piston had chiped off and was rattling around in the combustion chamber. My first experence with the 4.6 was not a good one. I sold the car and went back to pushrod.......
