At any rate, I just brought the car in for charging system testing. Everything tested perfectly. They got over 14 volts at the battery terminals after I had just gotten 12.5 volts. I was confused, and they thought that I had made a mistake or that the problem was intermittent. So when I got home, I duplicated my test with the voltmeter, and got the same 12.5 volts reading. I scratched my head for a minute, and then decided that I should try taking the probes out of the gaps in the battery cables (which are filled with grease and corrosion), and just hold them onto the clean parts of the terminals. Well I did, and got a normal reading. The grease between the DVM probes and the battery terminal connectors was sucking about about a volt, making me get a lower reading. Live and learn.
That still doesn't explain why, in general, my dash meter has been reading lower lately. Could it be because I'm using the A/C a lot recently?

are your terminals corroded? if so you can use some fine sand paper to clean em off and get that fresh terminal connecting to your cables. should help out alot if you have corroded or dirty terminals.

do not do the shadetree trick of disconnecting the positive batery cable, this will fry the alternator
