RE: Piston to valve clearance
85 5.0 MOTORS HAVE VALVE RELIEFS!
IT IS THE 86 THAT DOESNT!
i just took my 85 apart, sure enough had valve reliefs. i know the original owner of the car so yes it is the same motor as it came in december of 84.

RE: Piston to valve clearance
ok thats good but id say still! do a valve clearence urself takes 5 min and is eaasy with heads off///put heaDS ON lightly bolt down with out gasket and put playdo on top of piston smash a lil flatb4..and when u turn motor over by hand a few times take heads off and measure playdo thickness with a feeler gauge ....u need at least 80 thousands of a inch..i like around 100 look for 100 on ya feeler gauge and measure playdo iff its about that thickness u have enuff clearence//be sure to put rockers on heads b4 u turn over u need them to compress springs..

RE: Piston to valve clearance
Some here to remember is that if checking Valve Piston clearance WITHOUT head gasket that you need to add what ever the thickness of gasket is to the number you got when you just 'clayed in' the pistons.....
I.E. if you got .060 without the gaskets and you are planning on the 'Fel-Pro' blues, they are .039 so add everything up.
.060
.039
looks like .099 to me, good on both side.........
