He can run a 17X9 rim with a 275 tire and maybe have to do minimal clearing...(quad shocks and maybe a little inner fender depending on the back spacing)

Sounds to me like some suspension mods would be in order and THEN do the rims and tires, you dont need insane meats to hook up necessarily. WHen I was EFI and the car ran really hard, I hooked very well until about 4500rpm and then it would start spinning, but off the line it was great.

4-way struts
50/50 drag shocks
new quad shocks
full length weld-in subs
tq box re-enforcement kit (in case I run slicks later)
4.10 gears
strut tower brace(not needed)
stock 88 GT springs (replaced the one's in the rear b/c they had started sagging a tad

I ran the stock turbine rims and 245/60/15 cooper cobra GT's (crappy)

car hooks semi decent.

why would you use 17" rims as your adding rotating mass so the car is slow and another them there is less sidewall for traction

a 275-50-15 will work nicely

Agreed, a 17 inch tire/rim combo is not ideal for getting a better 60 foot.

I wasn't sure of the other side walls for a smaller rim....I have 17's so that is what I run
