Ongoing Project
ok, well between a newborn and work, I have managed to get my 302 block out of my old mustang and got it on a stand. I have removed the heads and started to look at just what all I have in this motor, I bought it "as is" I have heard it run and have drove it, so I know its a strong motor presay, and I don't think it has a stock cam. But since this is my first real motor build up, I don't know what to look for, I know I want to have the block checked and "machined" but I don't know what to look for in a shop so I don't get taken for a ride.
Is there any markings on a cam so that once I pull it out of the block, a newbie like me could tell what type of cam I have? I am mechanicaly apt but lack the prior knowledge of total rebuilds, but I want to learn. I hope someone can help with some sugestions

RE: Ongoing Project
most cams have information on either of the ends. should have the maker and some other info.... just dont let the cam lay on the lobes for an extended period of time. stand it up on end if u r going to keep i tout. just look for scratches in the cylinder walls and make sure the pistons themselves look fine. might also be a good time to replace the rod and main bearings, freeze plugs, etc. as for a machine shop... ask around for other ppls opinions. if someone knows a good place they will be happy to tell you about it. especially if it is good cheap work.
