The top marking is the one to look at......its closest to the middle of the engine. When you are timing with a light you should be leaning on the passenger side. The tab closer to the driver side is the one. Its alittle hard to read but you have find a good spot to get it and yes mark it with liquid paper or a crayon and it MUCH easier.

Earlier today, I took a little silver RTV sealant, and smeared it on the balancer timing marks, and then wiped it clean. The RTV stayed in the engraved timing lines, and I was able to see it perfectly while setting the timing.

Yea I actually sprayed mine with a little lube and it showed the marks OK.......They just get a rusty coat and its hard to see

That works well too. That's what I did with my old balancer...for the same reason. With the new one, I wanted something more permanant.
