Yeah just get some heads. I just picked up some ported and polished GT40 heads for $300 in the recycler. So patience helps.

I haven't bumped the timing and the previous owner never mentioned it so i assume it hasn't been done. You're saying that if i get some Gt40 heads and bump the timing i could get close to what I'm aiming for?
easy.

there are different kinds of GT-40 heads too............

GT-40 ........ cast iron not much better than stock
GT-40P ........... cast iron came off explorer, find on ebay for $400 all the time
GT-40X ........... nice $1,000 aluminum heads

careful what you buy.

you get 3-4hp per degree of timing, factory sets it somewhere between 8-10.
bump to 14-15 and pick up another 15-20 hp. but have to run Premium gas.
VERY easy to do, need $6 distributor wrench and $40 timing light, takes about 20mins.
i fit a craftsman 1/2" wrench down to the dizzy hold down bolt pretty easily. if you're a tightass about $6

I have a 94 Gt with headers, exhaust and a K&N airfilter and is running an estimated 230-240 hp. What would be the cheapest way for me to move up a bracket to the 275+ hp range? The only condition I have is that the car has to stay naturally aspirated. Any input would be appreciated.
i would be surprised if it made 200hp on a rear wheel dyno. thumpers flow as well as stock gt40p heads, for much less money a set of 69-74 351w heads or 289 heads will make the same power for half the price. the most power ive seen thumpers make was on a fully blueprinted engine was 290hp. 275 is tops for most thumpers. a set of ported gt40s for the same cash will make 350 on the same engine.

You can put 289 heads on a 5.0? I can easily get some 65-66 289 heads for free, would they work?

yup they flow the same as ported thumpers, 69-74 351w's, gt40's, and gt40p's. they also have nice small combustion chambers for a little more compression.

i mean no there terriable! you should let me take them off your hands for $50.

Wow, I didn't think they would work since they would be going on a 302. Could I use the stock intake manifold or would I need a different one? Could I keep the stock cam?

While we're at it, I have some black Cobra valve covers for a 289. Could I replace my stock valve covers with them or would I have to use the 289 heads? They look like this:

the 289 and 302 are the same block, you can use your stock cam and intake. the valve covers would work if you didnt want to put oil in it. the intake screws that for you. they are more or less a direct bolt on. you will need different rockers (stock 289 or any other stud mount of your choise) as the metric 5.0's use pedistle mount (bolt on). nice valve covers by the way

if you have around 240 adding 30 hp is usually easy with a stock head port job..i have added 36 hp at fly with ported stock heads..if you want over 275..heads aftermarket...a cam and intake change is good for 20-30 hp usually on a stock head car...at fly.
