Default Explorer intake?

Well I believe I read in this forum before that a certain year or few years there were explorers that people would take the intakes off of and put them on 95. 5.0's. IM wondering if this is true and if it is are the heads on those years explorers also better? Any information is highly appreciated.

I can't remember hte exact years, although I could probably look it up. But yes it's true. And the heads you are talking about would be the GT-40p heads from the old 5.0 V8 Explorers.

Sorry if that doesn't help much... can't remember the exact years off the top of my head.

***EDIT** Found a thread where people were talking about them:

I wouldn't bet on it since the Exploder has a different exhaust setup. The 96-97.5 Explorer has the GT40 (3 bar) heads and a true GT40 lower intake. The uppers are the same for all years of explorers/mountaineers. The 97.5+ have GT40P heads (4 bars) which require headers in which the primaries come out farther from the heads before turning in order to clear the plugs. They also have a different version of the GT40 lower intake in that it does not have the bung for the CTS (coolant temp sensor), so you will have to drill and tap it.

+1 agreed

although the gt40p do not have the thermactor pump holes drilled in the heads, so smog may be an issue, kinda funny seing as how the newer gt40p heads will actually improve your sniffer test. ask a shop about drilling some "faux" holes or swapping in the newer explorer EGR setup.

edit- or have a shop drill the holes, i been told it cost about 100$
