block cracked?

my brother has a 94 50 and has all of a sunden lost power and his buddy says he might have a cack in the block his also over heating what would be a sign

i didnt even know a blown head gasket makes a noise. when mine blew, the car ran fine for about 30seconds......while white smoke poored from the tail pipes
