Default Best cam to use?

I am building up a 302, stroking it out to a 331. Any suggestions on what cam to use? The motor is going into an '88 Saleen and I want it to have a mild street cam, but not sure of what lift and duration to use. I plan on using the car to have fun with on the road, so I do not need a cam for the drag strip.

Thanks,

Ort4

My first choice would be Jay Allen @ www.camshaftinnovations.com That would be money well spent. But in case you aren't one of those guys and want an OTS cam, look for something in the 224/230 @ .050 range. Your aftermarket pistons will handle more lift that you're going to want to run so don't even worry about it. Ignore the rpm ratings because they are for a 302. Remember you are working with roughly 10% more displacement and that will effectively lower the rpm range of the cam.

It would be much nicer with we knew the combo you were working with and not just the cubic inches. Some GT40Ps and a Cobra intake won't get the same recommendation as a set of AFR 185s and a Performer RPM II. But I think I've thrown out a good starting point for a mild 95% street 331.

I am running a 302, stroked to a 331. GT 40 Heads and GT40 intake. I still need a cam, crank, and pistons. Hopefully this info will help you narrow in on what I need.

I noticed these types of cam shafts on the referenced website. Which one would be best?

Hydraulic Flat Tappet
Hydraulic Roller
Solid Flat Tappet
Mechanical Roller

Thanks,

You're motor is a hydraulic roller. You need to figure out the rest of your combo before you pick your cam. What heads, rockers, and intake are you going to run?

Its hard to reccomend a cam with out knowing bare minimum what heads and intake you plan to run. IMO, a B cam with 1.72's would be better than a E cam. Relatively similar lift but the B cam has more duration. Honestly, I would just get a custom grind, theyre perfectly matched to YOUR engine. The letter cams are basically generic cams, meant to be run in a bunch of different cars.
As for mechanical or solid cams. Those arent really necessary, unless you want to lash your valves all the time. Or youre going to run REALLY high rpm's (8500+).

You can run as nasty a' cam as you want, but the trick is to run a rear end gear to keep it in the power band. Always run the rear end gear that the cam specs out.

Also, you wanna' run a cam that doesn't flow anymore than what your heads flow. If you have stock heads, it doesn't make sence to run anything more than an E cam for example. They won't flow over .500 lift, and the E cam is .499 lift.

Call up Comp Cams and tell them your combo. They'll tell you what's best. Then you can find a comprable cam that's cheaper.

My bad, I missed that....I'd go w/ what has been suggested. E cam, B w/ 1.7's, or even the TFS stage 1.

That's not true.

Then call back an hour later and get a different tech and he'll recommend you a different cam. We've done this several times in the past to several manufacturers' tech lines just to get the point across to people.
