Default Pros/Cons of Bumped Timing...

If somebody could tell me I'd appreciate it, or directing me to another forum with this info..
I tried searching for it but didn't find what I was looking for

From previous internet reading, I heard stock timing was set at 10* and bumping to 13* is what most people do...usually the highest you can bump it to without many issues
What exactly does this do-- pros + cons?

pros; more hp, better throttle response, possible better miliage but most people drive too hard to get better miliage.

cons; have tu run higher octane fuel (depending on high much timing you add), add too much timing or not enough octane and you will ping

typically, people seem to like 14* but then again, it depends on what you have under the hood. All-Motor and you can often run higher. But if you have have a turbo, S/C, etc then you may have to retard it some.

Basically, if you bump it you will gain more HP, but you will have to run higher octane gas. You also risk detonation if you advance it too far. There's more to it than that, but that's a really simplified version.

stock timing is set as low as 7-8* to 10* on some cars, you could go to 14* on 87 octane no problems, beyond that you'll need to up your fuel to 93 for 18* and such.... ^ lucky was dead accurate on the pro's and con's... theres a how to in the stickies.... Good Luck & do it, it's the best free mod you can get, next to loosing the stock air box.

I would advance it to 14* and run the higher octane. You can even go a bit further if you want. Some people will keep advancing it 1* at a time until they hear pinging at WOT. Then they set it back 1* and run it there. Others say that they notice no real gains past 14* or so. But I haven't heard people complain about anything between 10 and 14.

Just remember, don't go cheap on the gas!

haha but gas here is $3.50 per gallon, and I'm in high school.
Generally speaking how long do you think it would take to bump it...I'm either going to do 13* or 14*
...I'm gonna read the sticky now, maybe it'll answer some ?'s

Every car is different. I have a bone stock 93 GT and I bumped mine to 13-14 on 87 octane and had no pinging what so ever... I run 89 in it just to be safe though incase there is a slight ping that I cannot hear over my exhaust or something.
