technicially any 85 or newer is a "world class" tranny. it has nothing to do with the tranny it has to do with the t5 design being purchased by borg warner.

NWC T5's were issued in 1982. First applications were in S-10 Blazers. By 1983 Ford started using them in the Mustang, GM had them in the F body Camaro and Firebird Cars, AMC had them in the Eagle and Jeep lines. AMC dropped the T5 by 1985 to make room for cheaper Peugeot and Toyota boxes. By late 1985 the first WC boxes were used by Ford. The WC boxes had 1st, 2nd, and 3rd speed gears riding on roller bearings instead of solid shafts. The countergears saw an upgrade to tapered bearings. The bronze synchro rings were replaced by fiber lined rings and dual cone designed rings to improve ring surface area. GM started using WC boxes as early as 1988 in the Camaro / Firebird line but still kept NWC boxes in S-10's and Astro Vans. By the mid 1990's most of the GM T5 installations were all World Class.

RE: World Class T5 Worth It?
my t-5 finally blew 2nd gear, after over 255000kms and at least 100 passes at the track with 400+ horsepower.
I put in a ford racing t-5Z which is a tremec t-5.
shifts smooth and will last a while.
the only downside is I paid $1902 canadian for it.

RE: World Class T5 Worth It?
I blew a freshly rebuilt T-5 with some upgraded internals after only 600 miles. I hit third at 5K and it self destructed. I now have a TKO600. Problem solved. This thing is the sh*t.
Hey ecstasy I thought that the synchros in the T-5's used to be a flimsy paper material and later on they were upgraded to some type of stronger fibrous material. Now, how is it that something like that that is made from a stronger material than paper is not going to be stronger and last longer in the trans? I'm not trying to argue, but I'd like to hear more reasoning behind what your friend says. Are we all just being lied to? As far as bearings go, I'm pretty sure they are all made out of steel, but some companies make crappy bearings and some companies make damn good ones. So I guess it's not a matter of strength so much but how well they are made. That's just my .02
