I had a similar problem on my first fox 5.0. The problem on the car MIGHT be why it's killing your gas is the fuel injectors my be messed up. On my first 5.0 the injectors where messed up. I forot exactly what it had but it was killing my gas milage and it smelled really strong so I had them replaced with new ones and it ran better. The smell wasn't as strong and my gas milage improved. Also check anything that has to do with the fuel delivery system like the fuel filter as well. Well good luck! Hopefully it's something minor.

Dirty injectors, bad fuel pressure, disconnecting your smog pump could be a culprit, straight exhaust may be bad so far as back pressure issues. EFI cars can be touchy, so much relies on the signals the computer is getting.

When I disconnected all my smog stuff, my car started running really rich. A carberator fixed my problems.

Sensors can GREATLY affect gas mileage and performance. Did you reset your computer after the new exhaust??? I'll bet the computer just needs to learn that your motor is flowing a bit better now.

PULL YOUR CODES!!!

I have a link in my sig showing how if you don't have a code reader.

Let the computer do the leg work, instead of guessing at what it might be.

Let us know what codes you get.

I bet your car might have a misfire at idle. When your engine mis fires it pumps a ton of oxygen into your exaust and your o2 sensors get confused and think your car is running lean so it dumps a ton of fuel into your engine to fix it and keeps switching back and forth. Your might just need a tune up. Just taking off the smog pump isn't going to make your car smell rich and your egr doesn't do anything at idle. in fact you should hook it back up. It doesn't use up any horsepower. All it does is take up space in your cylinders by pumping exaust gas into them while you are cruising. This lowers combustion temps alot and helps your engine last longer. You may also have a leaking injector. Hook a vaccum gauge up to your engine. If fluctuates between 18" and 0" instead of holding steady then you need a set of injectors.
