Its the project code given to that "platform" by ford... I believe 79-93 was FX3 or FOX, 95-98 was SN95, 05+ is S197

Also , the 99-04 were technically SN-95s as just about everything but sheet metal will swap, even the interior parts are marked SN-95. But to keep them seperate the industry has adpopted the New Edge monoker.
