Gas Tank: cleaning way to clean it out?
i have to replace my fuel pump. i have had the gas tank out previously and noticed there was a lot of rust chips in it. probably from running it on low too much. also when i replaced the fuel filter recently it was clogged with it big time. i cannot afford a new tank when i do the pump. is there a way to clean this out? i flushed it with water when i had it out for the sender but i don't think that was a good idea. if there is no way to clean the rust crap out then i will keep running it with a loud pump until i can afford a tank....

take the tank completly out seal up the fuel outlits. take a medium link chain and some nuts and bolts and throw it in there. shake the living hell lout of the gas tank, that will losten all the rust scale out of the tank. tip it out to get most of the crap out, (keep the chain and bolts in etc) take half a cup of degreaser and some near boiling water, and shake it for several minuites making sure you get the top of the tank as well. wash that out with hot water, (remove chain etc) use some dawn dishsoap and clean it out. rince the tank as many times as it takes with cold water for the tank to be soap and crap free.
use methal ethyl keytone cleaner if you can find it instead of degreaser, it kills everything.
buy a tank liner product like KREEM Gas Tank Sealer ($30-40 most places), it works the best as i have seen. once you prep the old tank like i said use the cleaner etcher in the tank, and follow the directions from there. it will make the gas tank like new and free from rust forever. there are other places that sell simular products that do work but after 5-10 years they seem to get disolved. most importang thing is to let the tank linder dry fully. (usally 24-48 hrs depending on the temp). it will be good as new.
