Default oil for stang

i have a 95 5.0, i've only had it maybe 5 months (about 4k mi) and have just used castrol gtx high mileage, but with the 10w-30 +lucas stabalizer it burns the oil when i get on it, should i use a different oil? or just a thicker oil. and another question, ive only EVER used castrol and royal purple, i refuse to use quaker state (because its some form of wax base i believe) but what about valvoline, is it any good? thx
p.s. i was refered here by my bro in law

I dont really know what weight these cars like (What is on the oil cap is usually not a good indicator of a car's true preference, LS1's are a perfect example). www.bobistheoilguy.com is a VERY good place for your question.

well, my 5.0 used to burn a quart every 1,000-1,500 miles [:@] so I used SuperTech 10-30w since its sold under the walmart brand so its the cheapest oil, but its supplied by mobil, so its still a good oil

Some motors like to use the oil. Mine does too, not a problem with that. The rings are in great shape. I burn about 1qt per 1200 miles or so. I did a compression check and got 150psi +-3psi. I run a carburetor with a PCV and a breather setup. I have NEVER found any oil residue on the hood above the breather nor has the breether element become oil foulded. Where does it go? I dunno...I do know that my PCV loves to suck that crap up. My intake is oily and I had a catch can on it for a while, it trapped a good bit.

Mine used to burn oil to the tune of 1 quart per 1k. Then I switched over to Valvoline Maxlife 10w30 (same weight as before), and I think the motor now uses about half that amount of oil. I'm sold.
