fyi....factory oil pressure guage design flaw
fyi..........
87 GT conv. 5.0L
bought my car 6 months ago, oil pressure gauge did not work
kinda scary....
so i tried to fix it....
(not that i put alot of faith in the factory guage....autometer is better)
anyway, so I pulled apart my ip and test the travel of the guage by grounding the
source signal (the boot that attaches to the oil pressure sending unit.....a mushroom
looking thing by oil filter)
the guage worked okay...full sweep from 0-100.
I thought perhaps the plastic cover was restricting the travel of the needle...indeed it
was, but not what i expected....
there are 2 tabs on the opposite end of the needle...they act as stoppers preventing
the guage from travelling too far...disappering from sight to the driver.
and the bottom one stops the needle travel at halfway, about a nominal value for pressure....
BAD!
with the stock config, if you ever had 75-100psi of oil pressure (really bad)
you would never see it on the guage, bec it would peg at nominal pressure....
so i cut the bottom tab off with a wire cutter, now the guage will travel full swing
from 0-100 psi...
stupid engineers....just proving again that you cant trust those factory guages....
