Default Easy fix?

I have a 89 Lx with a 4 barrel carb and the choke seems to be broke, is this easy to fix or do i need to take it to the shop? It was stuck and i tapped it with a screwdriver now it stays open about 1/4 of the way and the longer i drive it the higher my rpms go up.

Get to the auto supply and find yourself a manual choke kit for the carb you are using, follow the instructions and you will cure your problem....

sounds like the choke linkage is pulling up the high speed idle cam that the throttle idle speed screw stops on when the choke is closed to keep the idle high until the choke warms up and releases the cam and the throttle can go back onto the normal idle stop. check for a binding in the choke linkage and you'll probably find the problem with why it's not opening correctly and fix the idle problem at the same time. some carb cleaner sprayed into each end where the choke shaft is mounted in the air horn will also remove any gunk causing any binding on the choke shaft keeping it from opening correctly.

thanks tinman if all else fails thats what i'll do....and roundman thats exactly what it is. The plastic looking piece below the "linkage" either isnt sitting right or something...i can move it up and down. I move it to where it should be and still not enough tention to hold the choke closed. Just to make sure you know what im refering to, it's the plastic thing that lays on the idle screw. When i move that down , the lickage to the choke is still too loose and it wont close. I have to put tention on the linkage then it will close the choke. But right now the choke stays open about 1/4 of the way. Could it be that little pin in the linkage need to be adjusted? Or is that plastic thing broke? Thanks again.

not exactly sure, but if you have a round black plastic box on the side of the carb in line with the choke shaft, then this houses the spring that moves the choke. you can loosen the three screws on the metal strip holding the box in place and rotate it to adjust the tension so the spring can close the choke all the way when it is cold. you will then need to check the position of the choke after the engine warms up to make sure the spring warms up and allows the choke to fully open all the way.
try this and see what this does for you.

I had the same problem months ago with my carb, Sometimes my choke would stick, I sprayed some carb cleaner in their work like a charm.

Good Luck
