Default Considering buying a 5.0

Hi,

My name is Eric I'm new to this forum but a regular on RoadRace-AutoX.com. I do own a honda/acura as my track car and am not what we would call a ricer. Everything on my car has a purpose and i hate wings and body kits, just so were on the same page. This car is great for the track due to being cheap and can take getting the crap beat out of it and always work with no problems. BUT it's not fast. There is no replacement for displacement as they say. My first car was a 69' el camino so I'm not totally new to v8's. This time around I'd like to do a 89-92 fox body 5.0 though. I'm looking to build a fun and fast daily driver and maybe hit the strip on occasions. I can't stand my current daily driver which is a 95 saturn

So any tips or recommendations on getting a 5.0 before I start getting ready to buy one would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Eric

i say do it, you wont regret it... as for tips, uh... stayin stock? go w. an 87 or 88 (speed density, faster, by a little, stock for stock), moding it go 89+. tell us what all you wanna use it for /do w. it and we can help ya a little more... either way theres a mustang for you. i have an 88 gt hatchback... no complaints here, lol. as for the lx vs gt debate, get what ever look you like mre, the weight shouldnt be that biga factor, unless its a track only car.

LOL That's kinda hard to give, lots of stuff to say. The 5.0 has been around since the ancient times and has proven its worth since I think '67 or '68. Anyway, you ca push around 550 whp before the block attempts to split itself in half.

They're very response to head, cam, and intake swaps. They also accept boost very well. It's no honda so you can't rev the **** out of them all day (it IS a V8 after all), but with proper care and maintenence a 302 will easily do 250,000.

Welcome, there is a lot of info in this section, do a search to find tons of info!

A few basic pointers, 87-92 had forged pistons and 225hp 300lbsft tq 93 had hyposomething pistons and had 205 hp on paper, but we seem to think that they just said that to make the 94 mustangs look better (215hp)

anyway 87-88 had speed density no mass air. 89-93 had mass air. Mass air cars respond better to mods but speed density is faster stock.

An LX notchback is the lightest and a GT convertible is the heaviest.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I did own a v8 car before the honda so i know it's not going to have an 8k redline stock. It's doesn’t need to rev high since it actually has torque..lol

I'd like to make it handle as nice as a mustang can for a reasonable amount of money, I’m not going to throw dampers with external reservoirs on a daily driver, maybe koni yellow sports or bilsteins. I don't know what type of suspension a mustang has. I'm going to go out on a limb and say it has a soild rear axel. I know ford uses I-beams on the trucks but does the mustang use an independent front end?

Motor wise I was thinking of putting in a mildly built 351 w/ turbo plans for the future. Maybe 30 series flow master exhaust, my friend with a cobra raved about the spin-tech mufflers he had, I have no experience with them.

I would like to go with the hard top GT. Doesn’t it have better suspension?

Thanks again,

Eric
