it seems like the gt40 heads are the way to go. Are they really that good?

They do notadd any performance really, the cowl would need to be sealed to the air cleaner in order to get any benifit. They really are for clearance and looks mostly.

they add a little performance on a carbed car, probably negligible

the air is not pulled in by a vacuum. when a car is driving, there is an area of high pressure that builds up at the cowl. in this way, the air is pushed in, rather than pulled. most cars utilize this high pressure system for the hvac.
